US Justice Department sues Texas over restrictive abortion law

The US Justice Department is suing Texas over a new state law banning most abortions after Attorney General Merrick Garland pledged to explore “all options” to overturn the restrictions.

The law prohibits abortions once medical professionals can detect a heartbeat – usually around six weeks – before some women know they’re pregnant.

It is the strictest law against abortion rights in the United States since the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v Wade decision in 1973. President Biden previously said the law creates an “almost un-American” vigilante system.
