The President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, announced his retirement from politics amid speculations that his daughter would run to succeed him.
Mr. Duterte was expected to run for vice president in the 2022 elections.
But his campaign would have been challenged on constitutional grounds, limiting presidents to a single six-year term.
The outgoing President is being investigated by the International Criminal court for killings by his administration linked to a crackdown on illegal drugs.
