North Carolina tropical storm kills two people

At least two people are dead, and more than a dozen are still missing after severe flooding in North Carolina.

Tropical Storm Fred has drenched southern American states, and now residents are assessing the damage, with thousands still without power.

The storm’s remnants dropped up to 12 inches of rain across counties in Haywood and Transylvania, causing water levels in some areas to rise between three and seven feet.

The governor declared a state of emergency on Wednesday as search and rescue efforts continued. Nearly 100 people have been rescued so far, with personnel conducting operations by boat and aircraft. The damage in some areas is devastating, with bridges now crumbling and homes left destroyed.
