Israeli-Palestinian crisis is ‘not a conflict between two equal sides’

Independent Journalist Antony Loewenstein says the current Israeli-Palestinian crisis is “not a conflict between two equal sides” with Israel as the “occupier” and the Palestinians the “occupied”.

“The context has to be seen of where this is coming from, which essentially is not just what’s happening now,” he said. “I think a lot of the media gets overly focussed on the question of Hamas fires rockets, Israel allegedly fires back. “This is an occupation … Israel has been occupying Palestinian territory – Gaza in the West Bank – for over 50 years.

“There are roughly 5 million Palestinians who live in the West Bank in Gaza who do not have equal rights; in fact, they have no rights, they can’t vote in Israeli elections, and therefore they don’t control their own lives.

“I don’t personally support Hamas firing rockets into Israeli, I think it’s unconscionable, it’s against international law, so there’s no question about that, but this is not a conflict between two equal sides. “Israel is the occupier, and the Palestinians are the occupied”.

Mr. Loewenstein told Sky News many Palestinians “are rightly skeptical” about the Biden administration sending someone to solve the conflict because the United States is “in the pocket of Israel”.
